Investigators recovered a firearm from the home but have not said who fired the shots or what led to the deaths.
CENTREVILLE, Va. — Fairfax County police are investigating the deaths of a husband and wife who were found with gunshot wounds inside their Centreville home Wednesday evening, while authorities say no suspect is believed to be at large and there is no continuing threat to the community.
Officers were sent shortly after 5:30 p.m. Sept. 9 to a home in the 6300 block of Sharps Drive after a shooting was reported. Police found a man and woman, both in their 30s, with gunshot wounds to their upper bodies. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Fairfax County police have described the case as a domestic-related shooting, but investigators have not said who fired the shots or explained the events that preceded the deaths.
A firearm was recovered inside the residence, police said. Investigators said they do not believe another person was involved in the shooting, and authorities said all parties connected to the immediate incident had been accounted for. No one was taken into custody, and police said there was no outstanding suspect or threat to people living nearby.
The couple’s young children were inside the home when the shooting occurred but were not physically injured, according to police. Authorities said relatives became involved in contacting emergency responders, though early reports differed on the exact sequence of that communication. The children were placed with extended family after the deaths.
The names of the husband and wife had not been released as of Thursday morning. Police also had not disclosed the children’s ages or said whether investigators had determined exactly where each person was inside the home when the shooting occurred. Authorities have not announced a motive or publicly identified which person, if either, investigators believe fired the recovered weapon.
Detectives remained in the Centreville neighborhood for hours Wednesday night while officers secured the area and investigators processed the residence. Police said detectives were examining evidence, looking into the family’s circumstances and canvassing the surrounding area as part of the investigation.
Officer Ingrid Palencia of the Fairfax County Police Department’s public affairs office said Wednesday evening that investigators believed there was no danger to the general public. Police emphasized that the early findings were preliminary as detectives continued working to determine the circumstances surrounding the two deaths.
Residents described a large police presence around the cul-de-sac as detectives worked at the home. Neighbors told local reporters that the deaths were shocking in a community they considered quiet and family-oriented. The investigation remained concentrated on what happened inside the residence rather than a search for an unknown gunman.
Police have not announced when the couple’s identities or additional investigative findings will be released. Detectives continue to investigate the sequence of events and the circumstances that led to the shooting.
