Investigators asked witnesses and nearby businesses for help identifying the driver after a 10-year-old girl died and a boy was critically injured.
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — Detectives are searching for a silver or gray Nissan Versa believed to have struck two children riding an electric bicycle in northwest Miami-Dade, killing a 10-year-old girl and critically injuring a boy before the driver left the scene.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office said investigators believe the wanted vehicle is a Nissan Versa from model years 2009 through 2012. Authorities released an image of the car and appealed for surveillance video, witness accounts and information from anyone who recognizes the vehicle as the Traffic Homicide Unit continued its investigation.
The collision happened at about 8:40 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, near Northwest 117th Street and Northwest Seventh Avenue. According to the sheriff’s office, the Nissan was traveling north on Northwest Seventh Avenue and approaching 117th Street when its driver turned left. The vehicle then struck the children as they traveled on an e-bike along Northwest 117th Street.
Deputies who arrived at the intersection found both children unresponsive in the roadway, authorities said. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took them to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition. The 10-year-old girl later died. The boy remained reported in critical condition in accounts released after the crash.
The driver did not remain at the crash scene, according to authorities. Investigators have not publicly named a suspect or announced an arrest. They also have not disclosed whether they have determined who owns the Nissan or whether the vehicle has been recovered. The sheriff’s office continued focusing its public appeal on identifying the car and the person who was driving it.
Investigators specifically asked business owners in the area to examine security-camera recordings that could have captured the Nissan before or after the collision. Authorities also urged anyone who was near the intersection and saw the crash to provide information. Such footage could help detectives establish the vehicle’s route and narrow their search, though the sheriff’s office has not publicly said what additional video it has obtained.
News crews at the scene recorded an e-bike and debris in the roadway as deputies worked around the intersection. Authorities have released the basic direction of travel and turning movement described in their preliminary investigation but have not provided a full crash reconstruction or publicly explained whether other factors contributed to the collision.
The children’s full identities were not initially released. Local 10 later reported that the girl was identified by the first name Peyton and described the boy as her older brother. Officials have kept most identifying information about the minors out of their public account while detectives continue pursuing the hit-and-run investigation.
The case remained with the sheriff’s Traffic Homicide Unit as detectives searched for the Nissan and its driver. Authorities asked anyone with information about the crash or who believes they recognize the vehicle to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
As of the latest information reviewed, no arrest had been announced and the investigation remained active. Detectives continued seeking information that could identify the driver and establish what happened after the Nissan left the intersection.
