Kapri DeRamus has left the hospital, but injuries, lost income and an ongoing police investigation remain after the Sept. 5 collision.
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — Police are continuing to investigate a head-on crash that seriously injured a Central Florida groom on the way to his wedding, leaving him with multiple broken bones before he married his fiancée from a hospital bed later the same day.
Kapri DeRamus was traveling to an Altamonte Springs wedding venue around 4:30 p.m. Sept. 5 when the collision occurred near Hermits Trail and State Road 436. The Altamonte Springs Police Department said three people were taken to hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening. DeRamus was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center.
The Orlando law firm representing DeRamus and his wife said another vehicle crossed a traffic lane before striking the vehicle carrying DeRamus. A fundraiser organized by the bride’s brother gives a more detailed account, saying DeRamus was stopped at a traffic light when another vehicle struck a median before hitting his vehicle head-on. Police have not publicly released findings establishing the full sequence of the collision.
DeRamus suffered two broken arms, a broken jaw, a rib injury and a serious cut to his knee, according to his attorneys. Other reports based on the family fundraiser have described two broken ribs. Authorities have not publicly released a detailed medical account, and the difference in descriptions has not been independently resolved.
The crash immediately disrupted plans for DeRamus to marry Tyasia Thomas at an events center about 15 minutes away. Thomas learned about the wreck roughly an hour before the scheduled ceremony and went with relatives to the hospital. Once DeRamus had been stabilized, the couple decided to marry there rather than postpone the wedding.
They exchanged vows that evening in a hospital multipurpose area with DeRamus in a hospital bed and his grandfather officiating. The unusual ceremony became the most visible part of the couple’s story, but the collision also left them facing a longer recovery period and financial consequences after the wedding.
A fundraiser created by Thomas’ brother, Maurice Mathies, says DeRamus works in a warehouse and cannot return to work while recovering. It says the crash also left the couple without their vehicle and forced them to postpone their honeymoon. The campaign was established to help with medical expenses, lost income and everyday costs during his recovery.
DeRamus was released from the hospital Wednesday, according to his attorneys. FOX 35 Orlando reported that he expects to undergo physical therapy as he heals. The couple has said they still hope to take a honeymoon in Europe after his recovery progresses.
The Altamonte Springs Police Department has not announced the findings of its investigation or publicly identified any citation or criminal charge arising from the collision. Attorneys representing the newlyweds have said they are evaluating the couple’s legal options as the police investigation continues.
