Crews faced flames, reports of ammunition and an unaccounted-for man as residents near Eaton Avenue were warned to shelter in place.
HAMILTON, Ohio — Firefighters responding to a burning home Friday night faced an unusually hazardous scene as police reported gunfire from inside the building, an armed man remained unaccounted for and nearby residents were warned to shelter in place.
The emergency unfolded in the 200 block of Eaton Avenue after Hamilton police were called around 6:50 p.m. for a reported fight between two brothers. One brother was found outside with injuries, while police were told the other had returned to the house and gone to an upper floor. What began as a response to a fight soon became a barricade situation involving police, firefighters and a large safety perimeter.
Family members told officers that the man inside might have access to firearms and ammunition. Police entered the home and tried to contact him, but officers withdrew after hearing what they believed were eight or nine gunshots from a nearby room. Authorities established a perimeter and continued calling for the man to come out.
The danger expanded when smoke began coming from the upper floors of the house. Additional sounds believed to be gunfire were reported before flames became visible around the roof and third floor. Firefighters were then called into a scene where the location of the man inside was uncertain and the possibility of firearms and ammunition remained a concern.
Fire crews worked from outside rather than immediately entering the burning structure. Authorities said ammunition was believed to be discharging because of the heat, adding another risk for emergency personnel. Police maintained security around the property while firefighters worked to contain and extinguish the blaze.
Residents nearby also became part of the emergency response. An alert instructed people within roughly a quarter-mile of the scene to shelter in place as police dealt with the possibility of continued gunfire. Witnesses described a heavy police presence as emergency vehicles filled the area and smoke rose from the house.
The fire was brought under control later Friday night. With the structure damaged and its interior potentially unsafe, police turned to drones to search the house and assess conditions before investigators entered. The remote search allowed officers to examine areas of the building without immediately exposing personnel to structural hazards or the possibility that the man remained inside.
Police had not publicly announced a confirmed location for the man in the latest available update. Authorities also had not confirmed a death connected to the incident. Details about the full extent of the injured brother’s condition were not released in the reports reviewed for this story.
The Ohio State Fire Marshal joined the Hamilton Fire Department in the continuing investigation. Authorities have not released a final determination on the cause of the fire, and investigators are still working to establish the full sequence of events inside the home after police withdrew.
The incident left investigators with several unresolved questions, including the location and condition of the man who returned to the house and precisely how the fire began. Police and fire investigators continued their work after the flames were extinguished and the immediate danger to the surrounding neighborhood had eased.
