Homicide detectives say an intruder forced entry into a Peek Road apartment before fatally shooting a 35-year-old man.
ATLANTA — Atlanta police are searching for a shooter after a 35-year-old man was killed Friday afternoon inside a northwest Atlanta apartment in what investigators believe was a targeted attack.
Officers responded to the Park West apartment complex on Peek Road NW shortly after 3 p.m. Sept. 11 following a report of gunfire. Police found the man inside an apartment with a gunshot wound to his torso. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.
Investigators said a person entered the apartment before opening fire. Police believe the shooting was targeted rather than a random attack, but authorities have not released a motive or explained why detectives reached that preliminary conclusion. The investigation remains active, and police have cautioned that details could change as detectives gather more evidence.
The victim had returned home shortly before the shooting, according to information released by police and reported from the scene. His fiancée and a young child were inside the apartment and witnessed the shooting. Authorities have not released their names or said whether either was physically injured.
Police have not identified the man who was killed. Authorities also have not released the name or description of a suspected shooter. No arrest had been announced as of Sunday, and investigators have not said whether they believe more than one person was involved.
Atlanta police brought a K-9 unit to the apartment complex as officers searched the area after the shooting. Detectives also were working with apartment management to determine whether surveillance cameras captured the person who entered or left the unit around the time of the attack.
Police said neighbors were cooperating with investigators and that detectives had evidence requiring additional follow-up. Authorities have not publicly described that evidence, and they have not said whether investigators recovered a weapon or identified a vehicle connected to the shooting.
Initial reports placed the shooting in the 2700 block of Peek Road NW, where the Park West complex is located. The property is at 2798 Peek Road NW in northwest Atlanta. Officers remained at the complex Friday as homicide investigators and crime scene personnel worked to establish the sequence of events.
The shooting came about three months after two teenagers were wounded in a separate incident at the same apartment complex. Police said that June shooting followed a dispute involving a large group of people. Authorities have given no indication that the earlier case is connected to Friday’s homicide.
The Homicide Unit continues to investigate the fatal shooting. The victim’s identity, the suspected shooter’s identity and the motive remained undisclosed as of Sunday, and police had not announced an arrest.
