Three other teenagers were hospitalized as investigators worked to determine who was driving the vehicle before the fatal rollover.
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A teenager was killed and three other teenagers were hospitalized after a vehicle fled an attempted traffic stop and crashed in northwest Harris County late Sunday, authorities said.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the incident began shortly after 11 p.m. near Veterans Memorial Drive, where deputies had responded to reports of vehicles doing donuts in a parking lot. A patrol unit attempted to stop one vehicle, but the driver fled, beginning a pursuit that ended several miles away on Ella Boulevard. Investigators said as many as five people were inside the vehicle, with most believed to be juveniles.
Harris County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Aric Albers said the fleeing vehicle traveled at a high rate of speed before the driver lost control near the 16500 block of Ella Boulevard, in the area of Westfield High School. Investigators said the vehicle struck a median curb and overturned several times before coming to rest upright.
Authorities said the vehicle’s headlights had been turned off during the pursuit. Albers said investigators believe the driver failed to remain in a single lane and may not have seen the curb in the median before the crash. Officials had not released the speed of the vehicle or the length of the pursuit as of Monday morning.
One teenager was pronounced dead at the crash scene. Three other teenagers were taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities had not released their medical conditions or identified the teenager who died. The sheriff’s office also had not publicly released the names or ages of the other occupants.
Investigators said another person believed to have been inside the vehicle left the crash scene on foot. Deputies continued searching for that person Monday while also interviewing the three surviving teenagers at the hospital.
A central question in the investigation is who was driving the vehicle. The sheriff’s office said investigators had not yet established the driver’s identity and were speaking with the surviving occupants as they worked to reconstruct what happened before and during the pursuit.
The sheriff’s office had not announced criminal charges as of Monday. Authorities also had not released the identity of the teenager who died, pending the continuing investigation and any required family notifications.
The fatal crash remained under investigation Monday as deputies worked to identify the driver, locate the person who left the scene and determine the full sequence of events that led from the attempted traffic stop to the rollover.
