Police detained several people after locating two vehicles that left the scene as detectives worked to determine each person’s role.
GARLAND, Texas — Three men died after a shooting outside a home in Garland early Sunday, and investigators were questioning several people as they worked to determine how a neighborhood dispute turned deadly, police said.
Officers responded around 7:45 a.m. Sept. 13 to the 400 block of Bayshore Drive after reports of a disturbance and gunfire. Police found three men who had been shot outside a residence. Two were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third was taken to a hospital and later died, according to the Garland Police Department.
The shooting remained under investigation Monday, with police trying to establish the sequence of events and the roles of the people who were at the scene. Authorities had not publicly identified the three men who died or announced criminal charges in connection with the shooting in the information released so far.
Garland police spokesperson Pedro Barineau said investigators believe the three men knew one another, although detectives were still examining the nature of those relationships. Police also were looking into whether the shooting grew out of a disturbance that occurred the previous night and continued into Sunday morning.
Investigators learned that two vehicles left the area before officers arrived. Police later located both vehicles and detained several people who had been inside them. Barineau said those being questioned were cooperating and providing information that could help detectives determine what happened before the gunfire.
The detentions did not establish who was responsible for the shooting. Police had not announced whether any of those detained were considered suspects, witnesses or otherwise involved. Investigators were continuing interviews and reviewing other evidence before making those determinations.
Detectives also were seeking surveillance video that could help establish what happened in the minutes before and after the shooting. Video from homes or other nearby properties could provide investigators with an independent account of movements around the scene and the departure of the two vehicles.
Police have not publicly released a detailed account of what caused the earlier dispute, who fired the shots or whether more than one weapon was involved. A motive also had not been formally established. Those questions remained part of the homicide investigation as detectives compared statements with evidence collected from the area.
The shooting left investigators with three deaths to reconstruct from an incident that unfolded quickly on a residential street. Police said the available information indicated the men were acquainted, but authorities had not released additional information about their connections or the circumstances that brought them together Sunday morning.
As of Monday, Garland police had not publicly announced arrests in the case or released the victims’ identities. The investigation remained active as detectives continued gathering statements and looking for video or other evidence that could clarify how the dispute escalated.
