Police say the gunfire on Shirley Avenue involved four victims, and no charges had been filed as the investigation continued.
EUCLID, Ohio — A 17-year-old boy was killed and three other people were wounded in a shooting in Euclid, authorities said, as police continued investigating what happened and who may face charges.
The victim who died was identified as Juelyon Bennett, 17, a Euclid High School student. The shooting happened Saturday evening, Sept. 12, in the 27200 block of Shirley Avenue. Police said three teenagers and a 19-year-old man were struck by gunfire.
Officers were first called about 6:15 p.m. to the area of East 260th Street and Shoreview Avenue, where two people suffering from gunshot wounds were found inside a vehicle. Investigators soon determined that the shooting itself had occurred nearby on Shirley Avenue and sent additional officers to that location.
As officers worked at the two locations, staff at Cleveland Clinic Euclid Hospital reported that another vehicle had arrived at the emergency department with two additional gunshot victims. Police later determined that the victims and the scenes were connected to the same incident.
Bennett later died from his injuries. Police said a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy were hospitalized in stable condition. A 19-year-old man was treated and released. The three surviving victims are Cleveland residents, according to police.
Early reports about the shooting said two minors had died, but updated information from authorities identified Bennett as the sole person killed and listed the other three people as injured. The revised account also provided more detail about how officers encountered victims at separate locations after the shooting.
Investigators have identified the people they believe were involved in the gunfire, according to subsequent reporting on the police investigation. Authorities had not announced charges as of the latest available update, and police had not publicly described what led to the shooting or identified a motive.
The case also reached Euclid High School because Bennett was a student there and several other people involved were described by authorities as current or former students. The district made counseling resources available to students and staff, while police worked with school officials to provide additional security on campus.
The shooting remains under investigation. Police have not released further details about the suspected shooters or announced arrests or charges, leaving key questions about the circumstances of the gunfire unresolved.
