Investigators say the fatal shooting unfolded Wednesday morning at a Bethel Avenue home, with no motive publicly identified.
PENNSAUKEN, N.J. — A 59-year-old woman was fatally shot outside a Pennsauken home Wednesday morning before police found her 60-year-old brother dead inside from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.
Pennsauken police were sent to the 4400 block of Bethel Avenue at about 9:01 a.m. Sept. 16 after receiving a report of a shooting, according to the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office. Officers were also told that a man armed with a handgun was at the residence. Investigators identified the woman as Janet Camacho of Pennsauken and her brother as Daniel Lopez, also of Pennsauken. Authorities are investigating the deaths as a murder-suicide.
Officers arriving at the home found Camacho on the front steps suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 9:38 a.m., prosecutors said. Police then established a perimeter around the property as officers worked to determine what was happening inside the residence.
Members of the Camden County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team were called to the scene while police maintained positions around the house. Authorities said Lopez was found inside at about 10:37 a.m. with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at about 10:41 a.m. The prosecutor’s office identified Lopez as the suspect in his sister’s killing.
The response brought a large police presence to the residential neighborhood. Television footage showed officers positioned around the property, and a robotic device resembling a dog was deployed through the garage as law enforcement worked to enter and clear the house. Some residents of a neighboring home were escorted away from the immediate area during the operation.
The sequence turned what was first reported as a shooting and barricade situation into a homicide investigation involving two members of the same family. Authorities have not publicly said what led to the shooting or disclosed a possible motive. They also have not said whether Camacho or Lopez lived at the Bethel Avenue house where the deaths occurred.
People in the neighborhood described being shaken by the violence. Several residents told local news organizations that they had known Lopez for years and had not expected an incident of this kind in the area. Michelle Jimenez, a neighbor interviewed by Action News, said Lopez had attended gatherings with her family and had been friendly with them before Wednesday’s shooting.
Authorities have not announced evidence suggesting that anyone else was involved. During the police response, officials said there was no known continuing threat to the surrounding community, although residents were warned to expect heightened police activity while officers secured the scene and investigators began their work.
The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office said the investigation remains active and ongoing. No further explanation for the shooting had been released as of Thursday, and investigators continued to seek information from anyone who may know more about what happened at the Bethel Avenue residence.
