HOUSTON, Texas — Houston homicide detectives were searching for surveillance video Friday after a man was fatally shot near a METRO bus stop on West Cavalcade Street, with investigators focusing on a vehicle connected to the early-morning attack.
The shooting was reported about 2:30 a.m. Sept. 18 near the intersection of West Cavalcade and Northwood streets in the Heights area. Houston Fire Department personnel responded and pronounced the adult man dead at the scene. His identity had not been released Friday morning.
The vehicle has emerged as one of the main leads disclosed publicly in the investigation. Police said it arrived near the bus stop around the time of the shooting and later left the area. Authorities had not released a make, model, color, license plate number or other identifying description.
Investigators were canvassing the surrounding area for surveillance recordings that might show the vehicle or people involved. Video from nearby homes or businesses could help detectives establish a clearer timeline, although police had not said Friday whether any footage had already been recovered.
A witness reported seeing a car approach the bus stop before the man was shot, according to information police provided to local news organizations. Early reports differed on whether the shooter fired from inside the vehicle or got out before opening fire, and police had not publicly settled that detail.
Detectives were also trying to determine why the man was shot. Police said it was not yet clear whether the victim had been deliberately targeted or whether the attack was random. No motive had been announced, and investigators had not disclosed any known relationship between the victim and the shooter.
