A person was detained as Broward sheriff’s detectives investigated the early Sunday gunfire and worked to determine what led to it.
LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla. — One man died and another was hospitalized after a shooting early Sunday in Lauderdale Lakes, where authorities detained a person while detectives investigated the circumstances surrounding the gunfire.
Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies responded at about 3:30 a.m. Sept. 20 to reports of a shooting in the 3200 block of Northwest 37th Street. Deputies found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound, according to authorities. Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue took him to a hospital for treatment. His condition had not been publicly released by Monday.
Investigators soon learned that a second man who had also been shot had been taken to a nearby hospital separately. Authorities said that man died from his injuries. Officials had not released his identity as of Monday morning.
One person was detained as deputies investigated the shooting. Authorities had not announced an arrest or criminal charge, and they had not said what connection, if any, the detained person had to the two men who were shot. The person’s identity also had not been released.
The distinction is important because detention does not by itself mean a person has been accused of a crime. Investigators had not publicly identified a suspected shooter or described a possible motive. They also had not said whether the shooting followed a dispute or involved people who knew one another.
Local television footage showed investigators working around vehicles in the area and sections of the street blocked with crime scene tape. WSVN reported that police dogs were also used as detectives searched the area for evidence. Authorities have not publicly detailed what evidence was collected.
Residents described being awakened or startled by gunfire before deputies arrived. One nearby resident told CBS News Miami that the noise was unusually loud and called the shooting a tragedy. Another resident told the station she was surprised by the violence and had been unable to return home while police worked at the scene.
Local 10 reported that a man was seen being escorted in handcuffs toward an ambulance, where first responders treated an injury to his hand before he was taken away for questioning. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether that individual was the same person BSO said had been detained or explained how the injury occurred.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office provides law enforcement services in Lauderdale Lakes, and its homicide investigators were involved in the case. Detectives were continuing to determine the sequence of events, including who fired the shots and what happened immediately before the gunfire.
No additional deaths or injuries had been publicly reported in connection with the shooting as of Monday. The identities of the two shooting victims remained undisclosed, and authorities had not announced charges against the detained person. The investigation remained active.
