Officers responding to a reported break-in heard a gunshot before finding a woman who had been shot through a steel door.
PHILADELPHIA — A woman in her 50s was fatally shot early Tuesday inside a Philadelphia apartment building as police responded to a reported break-in, authorities said. No arrests had been announced as detectives worked to determine what led to the shooting.
Philadelphia police were called around 3 a.m. to an apartment building on the 1500 block of Girard after receiving a report of a break-in. Investigators said officers heard a gunshot coming from a first-floor apartment after they arrived at the building.
Police later found a woman in her 50s who had been shot in the chest through a steel door leading to the hallway, according to investigators. She was taken to Temple University Hospital, where she died around 3:30 a.m. Police had not publicly identified her as of Tuesday morning.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained under investigation. Authorities had not said who fired the shot, whether the victim lived in the building or how the reported break-in was connected to the gunfire. Police also had not released information about what happened immediately before officers reached the apartment.
Chief Inspector Scott Small said police recovered a semiautomatic firearm during the investigation. Authorities had not announced whether investigators determined that the recovered gun was used in the fatal shooting.
Another woman in her 50s was inside the apartment where the shooting occurred and was cooperating with investigators, police said. Authorities did not identify her or describe her relationship to the woman who died. Police also did not characterize her as a suspect.
The case left detectives examining a shooting that unfolded while officers were already at the building on another call. Investigators were working to establish who was inside the apartment and hallway, what prompted the original break-in report and how the fatal shot came to be fired through the door.
No arrests had been made, and police had not released a description of a possible suspect. Investigators also had not announced a motive. The homicide investigation remained active Tuesday as detectives continued gathering information about the shooting.
