Philadelphia detectives are examining video and ballistic evidence after two gunmen killed a 19-year-old near a rideshare pickup.
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Surveillance footage, dozens of spent shell casings and a firearm recovered near a slain 19-year-old are among the evidence Philadelphia police are examining after two gunmen opened fire during an apparent ambush in Overbrook early Wednesday.
The victim was outside a home in the 800 block of Wynnewood Road and preparing to enter a rideshare vehicle when the shooting began shortly before 3 a.m. Sept. 23, police said. Investigators said he had been spending time with friends before coming outside. Two shooters approached and fired at close range, striking him multiple times.
Officers responding to the block found the 19-year-old critically wounded amid a large number of spent shell casings. He was taken to Lankenau Hospital and later pronounced dead. Police had not released his identity as of Wednesday morning, and investigators had not announced a motive for the killing.
More than 40 spent shell casings were recovered, according to police accounts. Several vehicles were struck, including the rideshare vehicle that had arrived to collect the victim. The driver escaped without being wounded and later contacted police after stopping away from the shooting scene.
One focus of the investigation is a backpack found close to the victim. Police said a firearm was inside, but detectives had not established who owned or possessed the bag before the shooting. Authorities had not said whether the recovered weapon was fired during the attack or otherwise connected it to the gunfire that killed the 19-year-old.
That unanswered question is part of a broader effort to determine what happened in the moments before the gunmen arrived. Investigators are also examining ballistic evidence from the scene, including the shell casings and vehicles struck by bullets, as they work to determine how many weapons were fired and whether the physical evidence can help identify those responsible.
Police also located private surveillance cameras around the block. Detectives were reviewing available recordings for images of the shooters, their approach to the victim and their direction of travel afterward. Authorities had not released a description of either suspect Wednesday morning.
The rideshare driver was cooperating with investigators, police said. The driver had been waiting for the victim when the attack unfolded and drove away as bullets struck the vehicle. The driver eventually stopped near Lancaster Avenue and alerted officers. Police said the driver was not injured.
No arrests had been reported, and police had not publicly identified a motive or explained whether investigators believe the victim knew the attackers. Detectives continued reviewing surveillance footage and physical evidence Wednesday as they worked to identify the two gunmen and determine what role, if any, the firearm found near the victim played in the case.
