Police said a driver struck the teenage siblings as they crossed a South Los Angeles street with their mother Tuesday night.
LOS ANGELES — A 16-year-old boy was killed and his 14-year-old sister was hospitalized after a driver struck the siblings as they crossed a street with their mother in the Hyde Park area Tuesday night, according to Los Angeles police and local news reports.
The collision happened about 9:30 p.m. near West 60th Street and South 10th Avenue. Police said the family was crossing the street when a blue Nissan Sentra traveling east on 60th Street struck the brother and sister. Their mother was not reported to have been hit.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His sister was taken to a hospital for treatment. Initial local reports differed on the severity of the girl’s injuries, and police had not publicly released a definitive update on her condition by Wednesday morning. Authorities also had not released the teenagers’ names.
Video from the area showed the sedan traveling along the street shortly before the collision. ABC7 reported that the vehicle appeared to go through a stop sign before hitting the teenagers. CBS Los Angeles reported that police said the Sentra was traveling at high speed and went through the stop sign. Investigators had not released a formal determination of the vehicle’s speed.
After striking the siblings, the sedan continued forward and collided with a parked vehicle, authorities said. The crash left the Sentra disabled near the scene. Police said a woman who had been driving the car and a male passenger then got out and ran away.
Neither person had been located as of Wednesday morning, and authorities had not publicly released their names or detailed descriptions. Investigators were working to determine who was driving and to reconstruct what happened before the collision. The abandoned car remained an important piece of evidence in the investigation.
One local report said police identified the Sentra as a rental vehicle, a detail that could provide investigators with records connected to the car. Authorities had not publicly announced whether they had identified the person who rented it or whether that person was believed to have been behind the wheel Tuesday night.
