The 16-year-old faces first-degree murder and armed robbery charges in the death of 41-year-old Kinsey Chatman.
BALTIMORE, Md. — A 16-year-old has been indicted on first-degree murder and armed robbery charges in the fatal shooting of a man during an encounter inside a Southwest Baltimore corner store earlier this month.
A grand jury indicted Sincere Rahim on Thursday in the death of Kinsey Chatman, 41, according to a report citing charging documents. The indictment marks a significant change in the case after police initially arrested Rahim on an attempted first-degree murder charge while Chatman was hospitalized. Chatman died three days after the Sept. 2 shooting.
Baltimore police said officers were sent to the 200 block of North Hilton Street at about 10:47 a.m. Sept. 2 after receiving a report of a shooting. Officers found Chatman suffering from gunshot wounds and provided aid before he was taken to a hospital. Police also found the 16-year-old nearby with a gunshot wound to his arm, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Charging documents describe an encounter inside the A&Y Corner Store near North Hilton and Kossuth streets. Authorities allege Rahim entered the store, approached an ATM and tried to take Chatman’s backpack from the floor. Chatman entered the store and tried to stop him, according to the documents.
Authorities allege the teenager then pulled a handgun and fired, striking Chatman multiple times. Police said the struggle moved from inside the store onto the street. Rahim then ran from the area, according to investigators. The allegations contained in the charging documents have not been proven in court.
Police said officers searching the area recovered a weapon. Investigators also obtained surveillance footage from the store that authorities said helped them identify the teenager. Charging documents say police located him later that day with assistance from a Baltimore County Police helicopter unit.
Police initially described the episode as a physical altercation between the teenager and Chatman in which both were shot. After the teenager was released from the hospital, police took him to the Central Booking Intake Facility and charged him with attempted first-degree murder. Chatman’s death on Sept. 5 turned the investigation into a homicide case.
The shooting occurred across the street from Green Street Academy. Baltimore City Public Schools said a nearby school was temporarily placed on lockdown after the gunfire as police searched the surrounding area. Authorities have not publicly established that the teenager was a student at the school.
The indictment now moves the case further into the court process, where prosecutors will have to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt. The publicly reviewed reports did not provide a trial date or detail Rahim’s next scheduled court appearance.
