Sentenced: Man Who Attempted to Kidnap Nancy Pelosi’s Husband Gets 30 Years in Prison

San Francisco, California – A man convicted of attempting to kidnap then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and attacking her husband with a hammer has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley handed down the sentence for David DePape, 44, who was found guilty of attempted kidnapping of a federal official and assault on the immediate family member of a federal official. The prosecutors had initially requested a 40-year prison term, but DePape was ultimately given 20 years for one count and 30 years for another count, to run concurrently.

During the sentencing, DePape remained silent as Judge Corley delivered his sentence and looked down at times. His public defense attorneys had advocated for a 14-year sentence, citing his lack of prior criminal history and personal struggles. However, Judge Corley took into account the severity of DePape’s actions, breaking into the home of a public official, which she described as unprecedented in the country’s history.

Before the sentencing, victim statements were read by Christine Pelosi on behalf of her parents, detailing the impact of the violent attack on their lives. The Pelosi family expressed pride in their father’s courage during the incident and gratitude for the support received during his recovery.

DePape had admitted during trial testimony to breaking into the Pelosis’ San Francisco home in October 2022 with intentions of holding the speaker hostage and harming her husband. He cited his belief in conspiracy theories and political motivations for his actions, emphasizing his distorted views on government corruption.

The trial revealed DePape’s plans to wear a costume and record an interrogation of Speaker Pelosi. Prosecutors presented evidence of DePape carrying tools and devices such as rope, zip ties, body cameras, a computer, and a tablet during the attack. Paul Pelosi recalled the harrowing experience of being confronted by an intruder with a hammer, sustaining injuries that would impact him for life.

DePape faces additional charges in state court, including assault with a deadly weapon, elder abuse, and residential burglary. Despite his defense’s claims of political motives, the severity of his actions has resulted in a significant prison sentence. The impact of the attack on the Pelosi family underscores the ongoing threat of violence and extremism in society.
