Police said the two 77-year-old suspects were detained within minutes after witnesses helped officers locate them near the Dublin Sports Grounds.
DUBLIN, Calif. — A married couple was arrested on suspicion of murder after their 40-year-old son-in-law was fatally shot Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds, police said.
Dublin Police Services identified the victim as Jonathan McKinsey of Dublin and the suspects as Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77 and also of Dublin. Police said Zhang and Chen are married and are McKinsey’s parents-in-law. Both were booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder as detectives continued investigating what led to the shooting.
The case began about 3:08 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, when a Dublin Police Services sergeant driving near the sports grounds at 6700 Dublin Blvd. saw a man lying in the parking lot, according to police. The sergeant stopped to investigate as dispatchers began receiving multiple 911 calls reporting the incident. Additional officers and emergency medical personnel were sent to the scene.
Responding officers found McKinsey in the middle of the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. The 40-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not publicly described what happened immediately before the shooting or identified a possible motive.
Witnesses helped officers locate two people suspected in the shooting within minutes, police said. Zhang and Chen had remained nearby and were detained by officers. Police later arrested both on suspicion of murder. Investigators said witness and community cooperation played an important role in the quick arrests.
The shooting occurred at a public recreation area that includes sports facilities and a playground. A witness interviewed by KTVU described the parking lot as busy on Saturdays, with children and families commonly using the surrounding recreation facilities. Police have not released a detailed account of how the confrontation began.
Police said Sunday that there were no outstanding suspects and no known continuing threat to the public. That assessment came after investigators identified McKinsey and announced the arrests of Zhang and Chen. Authorities have not said whether investigators believe anyone else played a role in the shooting.
The family relationship between the suspects and McKinsey is among the central facts investigators have confirmed, but authorities have not announced what may have prompted the violence. Detectives are continuing to examine evidence and the circumstances surrounding McKinsey’s death.
The arrests mark an early stage in the criminal case. An arrest on suspicion of murder is not a finding of guilt, and the allegations against Zhang and Chen remain subject to court proceedings. KTVU reported that the couple was scheduled for arraignment Wednesday morning.
Dublin Police Services said the homicide investigation remains active. Authorities have asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact investigators as detectives work to establish the events that preceded McKinsey’s death.
