PHILADELPHIA — A woman fatally shot a masked man who police say broke into her second-floor apartment on Castor Avenue early Wednesday, touching off a homicide investigation into a confrontation that authorities said began when the man forced his way into the home.
Philadelphia police responded to the apartment building in the 4600 block of Castor Avenue around 5 a.m. Sept. 30. Investigators said the 29-year-old man had entered the apartment after breaking a window. The woman who lived there encountered him inside and fired at him, police said. At least one bullet struck the man, who was found unresponsive in a bedroom and pronounced dead about 5:30 a.m.
Chief Inspector Scott Small said investigators believe the man was wearing a mask when he entered the apartment. Police said the woman heard windows breaking before encountering him inside. The available reports did not identify either the woman or the man, and authorities had not publicly released additional details about what happened immediately before the shots were fired.
The woman remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators Wednesday morning. Police also recovered a firearm as part of the investigation. Authorities had not announced an arrest or criminal charges in connection with the shooting as of the morning hours.
The circumstances surrounding the man’s entry are central to the investigation. Police described the incident as a break-in and said investigators believe he entered through the rear of the building or through a broken second-floor window. Authorities had not released information explaining why he went to the apartment or whether anything was taken from the home.
