Police have not identified the brothers or disclosed what sparked the dispute that left one dead and another critically injured.
HOUSTON, Texas — Houston police were investigating what led two brothers to exchange gunfire at a southwest Houston home early Saturday, leaving one dead and the other hospitalized in critical condition while the cause of their dispute remained unknown.
Officers were called shortly after 1:27 a.m. Oct. 3 to a residence in the 16600 block of Parkridge Court. Police said an argument between the brothers escalated until both men were shot. Investigators had not publicly explained what started the confrontation or released the brothers’ identities as of Saturday morning.
The surviving brother was identified by authorities only as a 40-year-old man. Police said he suffered gunshot wounds to the head, arm and leg before Houston Fire Department personnel took him to a hospital. He was listed in critical condition in the initial police account, and no later medical update had been announced.
Police said the other brother ran about 100 yards from the residence after the confrontation. Officers later found him at a second location, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities said he appeared to have suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound after leaving the original scene.
The dead man’s exact age and identity had not been confirmed publicly. Initial reports described him as appearing to be in his late 30s or early 40s. Officials also had not publicly identified the hospitalized brother beyond his age.
Several central questions therefore remained unresolved Saturday, including what the brothers were arguing about, what immediately preceded the gunfire and whether anyone else witnessed the confrontation. Police had not announced a motive or provided a detailed timeline beyond the early-morning shooting call and the discovery of the second brother nearby.
Investigators also had not released additional information about physical evidence from either location. The early police account established that the confrontation involved the two brothers and that both were struck, but officials had not provided further details about the weapons involved or any other circumstances surrounding the dispute.
The lack of official identifications and a stated motive left the investigation open as detectives continued reviewing the circumstances of the shooting. Authorities had not announced any additional suspects or criminal charges in connection with the incident.
Houston police said the case remained under investigation. The surviving brother’s condition, the identities of both men and the reason for their argument had not been publicly updated by authorities as of Saturday.
