Football Night Turns Chaotic as Teen Shot Outside Ocoee High

A teenager was wounded after Friday’s game as police responded to fights in the school parking lot, authorities said.

OCOEE, Fla. — A shooting outside Ocoee High School after a Friday night football game is drawing concern about safety at school sporting events while police search for the person who wounded a teenager during a confrontation.

The juvenile suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening after being shot following the Oct. 2 game between Ocoee and Jones high schools. Police said officers had responded to multiple fights in the parking lot after the game before the shooting was reported at about 9:24 p.m. Investigators later said the incident stemmed from a confrontation involving several teenagers outside the stadium.

The shooting unfolded as students, families and other spectators were leaving the campus. A Jones High School student told WESH she ran and ducked behind a vehicle when she heard gunshots. Other witnesses described the sudden scramble that followed the gunfire.

Bishop Kelvin Cobaris, who attended the game with his family, told WFTV that he worried his children could have been caught in the gunfire while moving around the stadium area. He said the incident was troubling because families should be able to attend a high school football game without fearing violence.

Police said the teenager who was shot was not affiliated with either Ocoee High School or Jones High School. The victim’s identity has not been released. Authorities have not identified a suspect or announced an arrest.

The sequence of events began after Jones defeated Ocoee 15-6. Police said multiple fights broke out in the parking lot, prompting officers to respond. Authorities have not publicly detailed what caused the fights, how many people were involved or whether the person who fired the shots had participated in an earlier altercation.

The violence has left questions about what security measures were in place as the game ended and what, if anything, might change at future events. WFTV reported that it asked Ocoee police whether additional security measures were planned for upcoming football games but had not received an answer at the time of its latest report.

Officials also have not announced any school scheduling changes or new security procedures tied to the shooting. Without an official decision, it remains unclear whether the incident will lead to added officers, revised dismissal procedures or other changes around future games.

Police continue to focus on identifying the shooter and determining what led to the confrontation. The wounded teenager was recovering, and no other shooting victims had been announced. The investigation remained active Sunday.
