Woman Accused of Killing 7-Year-Old Girl in Daytime Sidewalk Attack

Witnesses intervened after 7-year-old Edi Mari Hernandez Chacon was attacked on a South Side sidewalk shortly before noon Saturday.

CHICAGO — Bystanders detained a woman after witnessing the fatal stabbing of a 7-year-old girl on a South Side sidewalk Saturday, keeping the woman at the scene until police arrived, authorities said.

The girl, identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as Edi Mari Hernandez Chacon, was attacked shortly before noon in the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue. She was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital and pronounced dead. The woman detained by witnesses was injured during the intervention and later taken into police custody.

Chicago police said Edi Mari had been walking south on the sidewalk when an adult woman approached her with a sharp object and attacked her. Witnesses then moved to stop the woman. Police have not publicly identified the woman or announced what may have prompted the attack.

The intervention by people nearby became a central part of the immediate police response. Authorities said witnesses held the woman until officers reached the scene. She was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening before being placed in police custody. Police have not released a detailed account of how the witnesses detained her.

Video obtained by local television stations showed people rushing toward the area after the attack, but authorities have released only limited information about the sequence of events. Police have not said that the video establishes a motive, and investigators were continuing to examine what happened before the girl was attacked.

8th Ward Ald. Michelle Harris thanked the people who intervened. In a statement, Harris said their quick response may have prevented additional harm. She also expressed sympathy for Edi Mari’s family, friends and others affected by the killing, saying children should be able to walk through their neighborhoods without fear of violence.

The attack stunned residents in the Chatham area. Local resident Denesta Freeman told reporters she struggled to understand the killing of a 7-year-old child. Other community members expressed similar grief as word of the girl’s death spread. Officials have not announced any public memorial arrangements or released additional information about the child’s family.

The woman remained in police custody as detectives continued their investigation. Authorities had not publicly announced a motive or identified the woman as of Sunday, and no final charging information had been released. Police were continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and the events that preceded it.
