Wawa Horror: Two Men Shot as Customers Scramble From Store

Two 20-year-old men were wounded as customers and employees were inside the Camden County convenience store Sunday night.

SICKLERVILLE, N.J. — Two 20-year-old men were wounded after a verbal altercation escalated into gunfire inside a Wawa in Camden County on Sunday night, authorities said, prompting an investigation that remained active Tuesday.

Winslow Township police responded shortly after 9 p.m. to the Wawa on the 400 block of Sicklerville Road. Officers found one 20-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound, and he was taken to Cooper University Hospital in stable condition. Authorities later learned that a second 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound had arrived at Jefferson Hospital in Washington Township before being transferred to Cooper.

Investigators said the confrontation began as a verbal dispute inside the store and intensified before shots were fired. Police have not publicly provided additional details about what prompted the argument or the relationship, if any, between the two wounded men. Authorities have identified the people involved but have not released their names.

About five to 10 customers and at least three employees were inside the Wawa when the shooting occurred, according to authorities. Customers began leaving the store as the dispute escalated. None of the customers or employees was physically injured in the gunfire, police said.

The shooting prompted a large law enforcement response and an overnight closure of the store while investigators processed the scene and professional crews completed cleanup work. The Wawa reopened at about 6 a.m. Monday.

Detectives are reviewing surveillance video as part of the investigation. Authorities have not announced any arrests or criminal charges, and no additional information has been released about whether investigators recovered a weapon or how many shots were fired.

The incident drew concern from residents who noted that the shooting unfolded inside a convenience store while customers and workers were present. Sicklerville resident Gloria Marquez told 6abc that the violence made routine nighttime errands feel unsafe. Another resident, Tom Conaway, expressed concern that customers, including children, could have been caught in the gunfire.

Police said they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public and that all parties involved have been identified. The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office is assisting Winslow Township police with the investigation.

No charges had been filed as of the latest public update. Authorities have not announced a motive beyond describing the incident as an altercation that escalated, and the investigation remains ongoing.
