Police say Roy Anthony Lopez reported killing his wife after arriving at a San Jose hospital with her in a vehicle.
MORGAN HILL, Calif. — A 37-year-old Morgan Hill man was arrested on suspicion of murder after police say he arrived at a San Jose hospital Saturday and reported that he had killed his wife, who was found critically injured in a vehicle outside.
Roy Anthony Lopez arrived at Good Samaritan Hospital at about 9:20 a.m. Oct. 3, according to Morgan Hill police. First responders located his wife inside a parked vehicle and provided emergency medical care, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family has since identified her as 34-year-old Jasmyne Garcia.
The case has become a homicide investigation spanning San Jose and Morgan Hill. Authorities said their preliminary investigation indicates the violence occurred at a home in the 1100 block of Vintage Lane in Morgan Hill before Lopez traveled to the hospital. Police have not released a suspected motive or the official cause and manner of Garcia’s death.
San Jose police detained Lopez at the hospital without incident, authorities said. Morgan Hill officers later took custody of him and brought him back to Morgan Hill for questioning. He was subsequently booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of murder. An arrest on suspicion of a crime is not a determination of guilt.
Officers also went to the Vintage Lane residence as investigators worked to establish what happened before Lopez reached the hospital. During a protective sweep, police found three children, ages 14, 6 and 3. The children were taken from the home and brought to the Morgan Hill Police Department before being placed in the custody of the Santa Clara County Department of Family and Children’s Services.
Morgan Hill police have released few details about the circumstances surrounding Garcia’s death. Authorities have not publicly described her injuries or announced what investigators believe led to the violence. Police told NBC Bay Area that no firearm was used, but they have not disclosed what caused Garcia’s fatal injuries.
The investigation began after San Jose authorities alerted Morgan Hill police to Lopez’s reported statement at the hospital. Detectives then focused on the Morgan Hill residence, which police identified as the location where the homicide was believed to have occurred. Investigators have not publicly announced whether additional evidence was recovered from the home.
Garcia’s family identified her publicly after police initially withheld the victim’s name. A family fundraiser described her as a mother of three who was born and raised in Salinas and whose children were central to her life. Police have not announced any additional arrests in connection with the case.
The homicide investigation remained active Wednesday. Lopez remained accused in connection with Garcia’s death, while authorities had not released a motive, final cause of death or further details about the events preceding the trip to Good Samaritan Hospital.
