3-Month-Old Suffered Skull Fracture, 20 Broken Ribs, Authorities Say

Investigators said the 3-month-old was found with 20 fractured ribs and a skull fracture during a hospital evaluation.

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Two Guilford County parents have been arrested and charged with felony child abuse after authorities said their 3-month-old child was hospitalized and found to have numerous fractures, including 20 fractured ribs and a skull fracture.

Deiza Rodriguez, 29, and Kiano Leroi Evans, 24, were arrested Oct. 2 and each charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury, according to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office. Both were being held at the Greensboro Detention Center under separate $100,000 secured bonds. Their next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 19 at 9 a.m.

The sheriff’s office said detectives with its Major Crimes Investigative Unit opened a child abuse investigation Sept. 5. Authorities said Rodriguez and Evans had brought the infant to a local hospital for evaluation of a head injury. During additional medical testing, hospital staff determined that the child had suffered multiple fractures.

Charging documents provided more detail about the injuries. The documents allege that the infant had 20 fractured ribs and a skull fracture and that the injuries resulted from a willful act showing reckless disregard for human life. The documents identify Rodriguez and Evans as the child’s parents. The allegations have not been proven in court.

Authorities have not released additional information explaining how investigators believe the injuries occurred or what evidence led detectives to charge both parents. The sheriff’s office also has not publicly disclosed additional details about the child’s current medical condition.

Earlier reporting based on arrest warrants listed June 8 as the date of the alleged offense. The child was three months old at the time, according to those records. A warrant was issued Oct. 1, and the two parents were arrested the following day. The sheriff’s office later said its Major Crimes investigators had begun their investigation after the Sept. 5 hospital visit.

The most recent information from authorities lists one felony child abuse charge against each defendant. The charge alleges serious bodily injury, but a criminal charge is an accusation. Rodriguez and Evans are presumed innocent unless and until they are found guilty in court.

Initial reporting on the case gave differing information about the defendants’ release status. Updated reporting on Oct. 6, citing the sheriff’s office, said both Rodriguez and Evans were being held in the Greensboro Detention Center on $100,000 secured bonds.

The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active and no further details had been released. Rodriguez and Evans are scheduled to return to court Nov. 19 as the criminal cases proceed.
