Angel Carrasco was arrested after a nearly two-day search as Nathaly Ramirez’s 8-month-old daughter continued recovering from the fall.
NEW YORK — A 31-year-old man has been charged with murder and attempted murder after police accused him of pushing his former girlfriend from a 15th-floor Bronx balcony while she was holding their 8-month-old daughter, killing the mother and critically injuring the child.
Angel Carrasco was taken into custody late Wednesday in connection with the death of 23-year-old Nathaly Ramirez, police said. He also faces charges of manslaughter, attempted manslaughter and assault. The charges are accusations, and Carrasco has not been convicted in the case.
Police said officers responded shortly before 3:40 a.m. Tuesday to 2550 Olinville Ave. in the Allerton section of the Bronx after receiving a 911 call about two injured people outside the building. Officers found Ramirez and her infant daughter with injuries consistent with a fall from an elevated location. Investigators later determined that both had been pushed from a balcony.
Ramirez was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her daughter was initially listed in critical condition. By Thursday, police said the baby was in stable condition and had improved enough to be transferred by helicopter from Jacobi Hospital to Cohen Children’s Medical Center for specialized care.
Investigators identified Carrasco, Ramirez’s ex-boyfriend and the child’s father, as a suspect and searched for him after the fatal fall. Police said a close friend of Carrasco later went to the 49th Precinct and gave detectives information about where he was staying. Members of a regional fugitive task force then took him into custody.
The U.S. Marshals Service said its New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force worked with local authorities during the search. The federal agency said Carrasco was apprehended safely after investigators began looking for him in connection with the case. Police have said the investigation remains active.
Carrasco was escorted from the 49th Precinct on Thursday as a crowd gathered outside the stationhouse. He did not answer questions from reporters. Police sources said he was taken for a psychiatric evaluation before being brought into the court process.
Authorities said there was a documented history of domestic violence involving Carrasco and Ramirez. According to police, Carrasco had been charged in January after allegedly slapping Ramirez during a dispute. Days later, authorities said, he was charged with burglary after allegedly entering her apartment while looking for her. Those earlier allegations are separate from the charges filed in Ramirez’s death.
The case has prompted mourning in the Allerton neighborhood, where residents left flowers and candles near Ramirez’s apartment building. Friends, neighbors and others who knew her have remembered her as a caring young mother. The killing also occurred during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, drawing renewed attention from local advocates who work with people facing abuse.
Police have not publicly released a full account of what investigators believe happened inside the apartment immediately before the fall. The criminal case against Carrasco is continuing, and authorities said the broader investigation into Ramirez’s death remains ongoing.
