Mercedes Plows Through Bronx Intersection, Killing 2 Pedestrians

Two other women were injured as investigators examine why an 81-year-old driver lost control in the Allerton neighborhood.

NEW YORK — Police have identified two women killed after a Mercedes-Benz struck pedestrians and several vehicles in the Bronx, while investigators continue working to determine what caused the 81-year-old driver to lose control.

Angel Johnson, 39, and Robin Kennedy, 57, died after the crash Friday afternoon near Allerton and Holland avenues in the Allerton neighborhood, according to police. Two other women who were struck survived. An 84-year-old woman remained in critical condition Saturday, while a 60-year-old woman was listed in stable condition.

The crash unfolded shortly after 2 p.m. as the Mercedes traveled through the intersection. Police said the vehicle struck four women and then became involved in a chain-reaction collision with several other vehicles. Johnson, Kennedy and the other two pedestrians were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where Johnson and Kennedy were pronounced dead.

Investigators were examining whether the driver suffered a medical episode before losing control. Authorities had not announced a final determination about why the Mercedes accelerated through the intersection. Earlier accounts of the crash varied as emergency crews worked to determine how many pedestrians had been hit and the conditions of those involved.

Surveillance video reviewed by local news organizations showed the Mercedes moving through the intersection before striking pedestrians and vehicles. Police said the Mercedes rear-ended two vehicles and then collided with two additional vehicles. The collision sent emergency crews to a busy stretch of Allerton Avenue and led to temporary road closures and delays in the neighborhood.

Several people who were inside vehicles involved in the crash were also taken to Jacobi Medical Center. Police said those patients were in stable condition. The Mercedes driver was conscious and alert after the collision and suffered minor injuries, according to an earlier police account.

The crash also damaged nearby property. Video and reports from the scene showed debris around the intersection, and nearby businesses sustained damage during the collision. Emergency responders treated multiple people while police secured the area and began collecting evidence.

Initial reports Friday reflected the rapidly changing nature of the investigation. Early information indicated multiple pedestrians had suffered critical injuries. By later Friday, authorities reported that two women had died and another remained critically injured. Police released the names of Johnson and Kennedy on Saturday morning.

No arrests had been made as of Saturday. Police have not publicly accused the driver of a crime, and investigators had not announced any charges. Authorities were continuing to review video, examine the vehicles and determine the circumstances that led to the driver losing control.

The deaths leave investigators with questions about the moments before the Mercedes entered the intersection, including whether a medical problem contributed to the crash. Police said the investigation remains ongoing as the 84-year-old pedestrian continues to receive treatment for critical injuries.
