Authorities say a woman at the home contacted police hours before five relatives died in an apparent murder-suicide.
DOUGLAS, Ga. — A police contact involving a woman at a Douglas home hours before five family members died there is receiving new scrutiny as investigators work to establish what led to the apparent murder-suicide.
Douglas Police Chief Brannen Pruette said the woman had contacted authorities earlier Friday about an issue involving her husband and his smoking. Emergency medical personnel took her to a local medical center, according to the chief. Police have not publicly disclosed additional details about that earlier encounter or said what connection, if any, investigators have established between it and the fatal shooting hours later.
At about 11:09 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, Douglas police officers and Coffee County sheriff’s deputies were sent to a home on Robin Lane after authorities received an active-shooter report. One of the victims placed the emergency call, police said.
Officers found four adults dead inside the residence. A fifth adult was taken to Coffee Regional Medical Center and later died. Police said all five were immediate family members who lived at the home and described the case Saturday as an apparent murder-suicide.
Authorities have not released the identities or ages of the people who died. They also have not publicly identified which person investigators believe fired the shots or explained the full sequence of events. Police said the investigation is continuing, leaving significant questions about what happened between the earlier call and the emergency response late Friday.
The earlier contact became one of the most significant details disclosed at a Saturday news conference because it showed that emergency personnel had been called in connection with the household before the fatal violence. Officials have not said that the earlier complaint involved a reported shooting, a weapon or a specific threat of violence.
Douglas City Manager Charlie Davis said the deaths marked the area’s second murder-suicide in about three months. He used the news conference to emphasize the broad reach of domestic violence and urged people not to speculate about the family while investigators continue their work.
The designation of the case as an apparent murder-suicide remains a preliminary investigative conclusion. Police have provided no final autopsy findings or detailed account establishing the order in which the deaths occurred. Authorities also have not publicly released information about the firearm or firearms involved.
Police said investigators found no indication of an ongoing danger to the public after responding to the residence. The scene nevertheless required a coordinated response from city police and Coffee County deputies because the initial emergency report involved an active shooter.
Officials have asked that the family’s privacy be respected while authorities work through the evidence. The deaths have drawn particular concern locally because of the number of relatives killed and the earlier police contact on the same day.
The investigation remained active Sunday. The victims had not been publicly identified, autopsy findings had not been announced, and police had not released a final determination explaining how the five deaths unfolded.
