Two young men were killed Friday near Leon Day Park, where a 12-year-old girl was fatally shot six days earlier.
BALTIMORE — Residents in West Baltimore are confronting another deadly burst of gun violence after two young men were killed and two others wounded Friday in a shooting only blocks from the scene of another fatal shooting less than a week earlier.
Baltimore police responded around 5:15 p.m. Friday to the 2800 block of Ellicott Drive in the Winchester area. Officers found an 18-year-old man who had been shot multiple times. Emergency medical workers pronounced him dead at the scene. Soon afterward, three other men with gunshot wounds arrived at an area hospital. A 19-year-old man died there, while men ages 21 and 22 survived and were reported in stable condition.
The shooting came six days after 12-year-old Khloe Ishway was fatally shot near Leon Day Park on Oct. 3. Four adults also were wounded in that shooting. The two scenes are within walking distance of each other, bringing renewed anxiety to neighborhoods that had already spent much of the week mourning Ishway and demanding answers about the violence.
Police have not announced evidence establishing a connection between the two shootings. Investigators also had not announced an arrest or publicly identified a suspect in Friday’s shooting as of Saturday night. Authorities have released few details about what may have led to the gunfire.
Residents who spoke with local news organizations described a neighborhood unsettled by how quickly the shootings followed one another. One resident, identified by WBAL-TV as Kendra, said she encountered crime tape and shell casings around the latest scene. She said people who have nothing to do with violent disputes can still suffer their consequences and expressed concern about young people becoming caught up in neighborhood conflicts.
The latest deaths have intensified that concern because all four people shot Friday were young men. The two who died were 18 and 19, while the surviving victims were 21 and 22. Their names had not been released publicly by police as of Saturday evening. A family member of one of the victims told CBS Baltimore it was too soon for the family to speak publicly about the loss.
The earlier shooting near Leon Day Park began with an apparent dispute over a parking space, according to police. Officers responding shortly after 6 p.m. Oct. 3 found Ishway and an injured 25-year-old woman. Two men, ages 23 and 28, later arrived at hospitals with gunshot wounds, and a 35-year-old woman subsequently sought treatment for a graze wound. Ishway died at a hospital.
Police later arrested 23-year-old Tyree Reynolds of Baltimore in connection with Ishway’s death and charged him with first-degree murder. Police said Reynolds was also wounded during the incident. The charge is an allegation, and the case has not been adjudicated. Investigators have said they are continuing to search for a second suspect in that shooting.
The proximity of the two cases has made the violence especially difficult for nearby residents to separate emotionally, even though authorities have not said they are connected. Community members told local television stations that everyday activities now carry added worry as families consider the possibility of being caught in gunfire unrelated to them.
Homicide detectives continue to investigate Friday’s shooting. Police had not publicly announced a motive, identified a suspect or reported an arrest as of the latest available update.
