A woman died at the scene and a man later died at a hospital after Sunday’s attack on Lakeshire Lane.
INDIANAPOLIS — Indianapolis police have identified David White as the man detained after two people believed to be his parents were fatally stabbed Sunday afternoon at a home on the city’s north side.
Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were called to the 2800 block of Lakeshire Lane, near West 96th Street and Township Line Road, at about 12:22 p.m. Oct. 11 on a report of a stabbing. Police found an adult man and woman suffering from stab wounds inside or near the home. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The man was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died.
Police said White was detained at the home without incident. Investigators believe he is the son of the two people who died. Authorities had not publicly identified the victims as of Monday morning, and police had not released additional details about what happened before officers arrived.
Investigators continued working to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Police initially described the case as a stabbing investigation and said detectives were seeking a search warrant for the home. No detailed account of the evidence recovered at the property had been released.
IMPD spokesperson Tommy Thompson said Sunday that the department believed mental health concerns may have played a role in the incident. Police also said the department’s Mobile Crisis Assistance Team had previously responded to the home and had contact with White over mental health concerns.
The Mobile Crisis Assistance Team pairs law enforcement response with behavioral health resources through a partnership involving Eskenazi Health. Police did not say when the previous visit occurred, what prompted that response or what services were provided. Authorities also had not established a publicly confirmed motive for Sunday’s deaths.
Thompson described the deaths as deeply upsetting for the neighborhood. City-County Councilor Leroy Robinson also expressed condolences and said the case raised broader questions about how families dealing with serious mental health concerns receive assistance.
Police had not announced criminal charges against White as of Monday morning. The investigation remained active, and authorities had not released the names of the two people who died or provided further information about the events leading to the stabbing.
