Several other people were hospitalized as investigators worked to determine what led to the violent early-morning incident.
MONROE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 15-year-old Monroe High School student died and several other people were hospitalized after authorities responded to an assault and residential fire early Saturday, launching an investigation that continued through the weekend.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office identified the teenager as Trenton Joseph Grant, a sophomore at Monroe High School. Deputies were called to the 1200 block of Raintree Boulevard at about 5:37 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, for reports of an active assault and a residence on fire. Authorities said deputies found a deceased male and numerous injured people at the scene. Several victims were taken to area hospitals.
The sheriff’s office said some of the injured people had stab wounds and lacerations but had not released an exact number of victims or their ages as of Sunday. Investigators also had not publicly explained what triggered the violence or disclosed information about any potential suspect. Authorities described the case as an active investigation and said the episode was believed to be isolated.
Michigan State Police troopers and crime lab personnel have assisted the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, along with Monroe Public Safety detectives. The Monroe Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance also responded. Officials have not publicly announced what caused the fire or explained how it was connected to the assault.
Early reporting from the scene reflected the limited information available as investigators worked to sort out what happened. Witness Raven Lawson told WXYZ that she and others saw people fleeing a burning home and moved to help them. Lawson said some of those leaving the residence warned that a man had a knife. Her account has not been presented by investigators as a complete reconstruction of the incident.
Lawson also told the station that a man she believed was involved came out of the residence and approached the vehicle she was in. She said the man eventually let go of the vehicle and dropped a knife near the driveway. Authorities have not publicly confirmed that person’s identity, his role in the incident or whether anyone has been taken into custody.
The sheriff’s office has not said how Grant died. Officials have said the other victims suffered injuries that included cuts and stab wounds, but they have not released their conditions. The lack of detail leaves several major questions unanswered, including the relationship among the people involved and the sequence of events before deputies and firefighters arrived.
Grant’s death has also affected Monroe Public Schools, where he had spent his academic career. District officials said he was a sophomore at Monroe High School and had participated in music and athletics. His death was publicly identified as investigators continued working to establish the circumstances surrounding the assault and fire.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office remained the lead agency in the investigation Sunday, with state and local authorities assisting. Officials had not announced a motive, identified a suspect or disclosed whether criminal charges were expected. Investigators have asked anyone with information about the incident to contact the sheriff’s detective bureau.
