Five Found Dead as Police Descend on Mundelein Home

A well-being check led officers to five adults with gunshot wounds as local and county investigators began collecting evidence.

MUNDELEIN, Ill. — Police said there was no continuing threat to the public Monday as investigators worked to determine what led to the shooting deaths of five adults found inside a Mundelein home during a late-night well-being check.

The investigation centered on a house in the 200 block of Wellington Avenue, where officers responded about 11:45 p.m. Sunday after a relative of one of the people at the residence requested a well-being check. Police entered the home through an unlocked door and found three men and two women dead in different rooms.

All five had been shot, police said. Authorities recovered two handguns inside the residence, but investigators had not publicly said who fired them or whether any of the people found dead was responsible for the shootings. No motive or detailed sequence of events had been announced Monday.

Police said the five adults appeared to be relatives or people in a domestic relationship. Not everyone found inside lived at the home. Authorities had not released their identities as the Lake County Coroner’s Office prepared to conduct autopsies and the investigation remained active.

Authorities repeatedly characterized the case as isolated. Mundelein Police Chief Tom Poynor said there was no threat to the public, an assessment that helped define the police response as investigators continued working at the residence rather than searching publicly for an unidentified assailant.

Still, police had not publicly explained the precise circumstances of the deaths. Investigators had not announced whether the shootings happened at the same time, who possessed the recovered firearms or what may have occurred inside the home before the relative called authorities. Those questions remained part of the inquiry.

Deputy Police Chief Rick Wilfenger said officers had not received reports of gunshots from the neighborhood before the well-being check. He also said Mundelein police had no history of emergency calls at the residence and no record of previous police interactions with those who were found dead.

The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force joined the investigation to provide evidence technicians. The Lake County Coroner’s Office also responded, and officers and investigators remained at the property Monday morning as evidence was gathered. The multiagency response drew attention to the normally residential area around Wellington and Prairie avenues.

Initial information about the scene was limited in the early morning hours, when authorities confirmed only that Mundelein police were leading a major investigation with assistance from county personnel. Police later disclosed the five deaths, the recovered handguns and the relationships investigators believed connected the people inside.

Mundelein police, the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force and the Lake County Coroner’s Office continued the investigation Monday. Authorities said additional information would be released as it became available.
