Man Shot Dead at Jacksonville Home, Police Detain Several People

Police say the victim and shooter apparently knew each other, but the relationship, motive and circumstances surrounding the gunfire remain unclear.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Detectives continued Tuesday to investigate a fatal shooting at a Durkeeville property, with key questions unanswered about what led to the gunfire even as police said they believed everyone involved had been accounted for.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded about 12:30 a.m. Monday to the 1800 block of West 13th Street after receiving a report of a person shot. Officers found an adult man with an apparent gunshot wound, and he was pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts by first responders.

The investigation quickly focused on people already at or connected to the property. Police detained multiple people for interviews and said early evidence indicated the victim and the person who shot him knew each other. Authorities had not disclosed how the two were connected.

That apparent relationship is one of several areas detectives were still trying to clarify. Police had not announced a motive, described an argument or other confrontation preceding the shooting, or explained whether the gunfire occurred inside the house or elsewhere on the property.

The victim’s identity also remained publicly undisclosed. Police did not release his exact age, although another local report described him as being in his early to mid-30s. Authorities had not identified the shooter or announced that anyone detained for questioning had been arrested.

Investigators remained at the scene for hours Monday. Detectives were waiting for a search warrant before entering the property to continue evidence collection, according to reporting from the scene. The delay left the area under active investigation well into the morning.

JSO Sgt. Saunders said during the initial response that investigators believed all parties were accounted for. Saunders also said police did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the surrounding community based on the information investigators had at that point.

The distinction between detaining people for questioning and making an arrest remained important as the investigation continued. Police had not announced any criminal charges, and authorities had not said whether evidence collected from the property had established that a crime beyond the fatal shooting itself had occurred or identified who could face prosecution.

Investigators were continuing to piece together the sequence of events through interviews and physical evidence. Authorities had not publicly released additional findings by Tuesday morning, leaving the victim’s identity, the precise relationship between those involved and the circumstances that preceded the shooting unresolved.
