Husband Claimed ICE Took His Wife. Now He’s Charged With Murder

Detectives said federal immigration officials found no enforcement activity at the Sacramento home where Jasmine Gill was last seen.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento man has been charged with murder after authorities said his account of his wife’s disappearance conflicted with investigators’ findings, including his claim that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had taken her into custody outside their home.

Gurinder Gill, 28, is accused in the death of his wife, Jasmine Gill, 30, who was last seen at her Sacramento residence on Sept. 30. Her cousin reported her missing Oct. 4. The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said detectives investigating the disappearance contacted ICE after Gill told them federal immigration agents had detained his wife while she was checking the mail. ICE told investigators that no enforcement activity had occurred at the residence.

The disputed account became a key part of an investigation that shifted from a missing-person case to a homicide inquiry. Sheriff’s detectives said they found several inconsistencies in Gill’s statements as they continued examining what happened to his wife. Authorities have not publicly detailed each inconsistency or disclosed what evidence ultimately led them to conclude that Gill was responsible for her death.

The investigation was also unfolding as authorities in neighboring El Dorado County dealt with a separate discovery. Burned human remains were found there on Oct. 1, one day after Jasmine Gill was last seen in Sacramento. The remains were later confirmed to be hers, according to the sheriff’s office. Officials have not publicly disclosed her cause of death or explained how investigators believe her remains reached El Dorado County.

Sacramento County investigators said they also learned that Jasmine and Gurinder Gill were going through a divorce and were involved in a child custody dispute. Authorities have cited those circumstances as part of the investigation but have not publicly identified a motive. The existence of a divorce or custody dispute does not establish why a crime occurred, and prosecutors will have to prove the murder allegation in court.

After the remains were identified and detectives continued their investigation, homicide investigators obtained a warrant for Gurinder Gill’s arrest. Deputies arrested him Oct. 14 and executed search warrants at two residences associated with him. The sheriff’s office said he was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on a murder charge and was ineligible for bail.

A criminal complaint reported by SFGate alleges that Gill killed his wife with malice aforethought. The filing represents an accusation, and Gill has not been convicted. Authorities have released limited information about the evidence supporting the charge, including whether forensic evidence, electronic records, surveillance footage or witness statements played a role in the decision to arrest him.

Jasmine Gill was a registered nurse and the mother of an 8-month-old child, according to published reports. Fox News reported that she was born in India and that supporters established an online fundraiser to help return her remains to her family and provide support for her son. Those family circumstances emerged publicly after authorities announced the arrest.

The case remains under investigation as Gill faces the murder allegation in Sacramento County. Investigators have not publicly released a cause of death, a detailed account of the evidence against him or an explanation of how Jasmine Gill’s remains came to be found in El Dorado County.
