15-Year-Old Arrested After 11 Shot Near Florida A&M Stadium

Police say a fight preceded the gunfire that wounded 11 people and injured another person fleeing the scene.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — A 15-year-old has been arrested in connection with a shooting near Florida A&M University’s football stadium that wounded 11 people after the school’s homecoming game, Tallahassee police said Monday.

The teenager faces 11 counts of attempted second-degree murder and a charge of possession of a firearm by a delinquent, according to the Tallahassee Police Department. Police said detectives made the arrest Sunday after receiving tips and digital evidence from the public. The investigation remains open, and authorities said additional arrests are possible.

The shooting happened at about 8 p.m. Saturday near Perry and Manatee streets, just west of Bragg Memorial Stadium. Police said preliminary findings indicate a physical altercation occurred before the gunfire and that the dispute involved people who knew one another. Investigators said none of the people who were wounded appeared to have been intended targets.

Eleven people suffered gunshot wounds, and a 12th person injured an ankle while fleeing, police said. Six of the injured were adults and six were juveniles. Authorities said the youngest victim was 11 years old. At least three people initially suffered serious injuries. Police reported Sunday that five victims had been released from the hospital while six remained hospitalized, including one in critical condition.

The gunfire erupted as crowds were in the area following Florida A&M’s homecoming football game against the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. The game had ended earlier Saturday at Bragg Memorial Stadium. Police have not established that the shooting was connected to the game or the university.

Police Chief Lawrence Revell said the arrest was an important development but did not mark the end of the investigation. He said detectives, crime analysts, victim advocates and other personnel had worked to identify those responsible and determine what led to the shooting.

Officers responded immediately after the gunfire and began helping injured people before the scene was fully secured, according to police. Detectives with the department’s Violent Crimes Unit later canvassed the area, collected physical evidence and reviewed digital material as investigators tried to reconstruct the events surrounding the shooting.

Police credited information supplied by members of the public with advancing the investigation. The department said it received a significant number of tips, photos, videos and other digital evidence after asking witnesses and others in the area to share material that could help identify those involved.

The arrest does not resolve several questions surrounding the shooting. Police have not publicly detailed what started the dispute, how the teenager allegedly became involved or whether other people fired weapons. Authorities also have not announced a connection between the violence and Florida A&M’s homecoming activities.

The case remained under active investigation Monday. Police said detectives were continuing to pursue leads and review evidence as they worked to establish the full circumstances of the shooting and determine whether anyone else should be arrested.
