Gunfire struck a nearby home before residents rushed outside and encountered a wounded woman whose vehicle had crashed along the street.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Residents along Greenwood Avenue were awakened by gunfire early Saturday before a wounded woman apparently drove down the street, struck a parked vehicle and was later taken to a hospital, where police said she died.
The shooting in Louisville’s Parkland neighborhood left investigators examining a block where residents described a sudden burst of violence shortly before 5 a.m. Police later arrested 19-year-old Tyrone Reed and charged him with murder and first-degree wanton endangerment. Authorities have not released a motive or explained what led to the shooting.
Louisville Metro Police officers responding to the 2600 block of Greenwood Avenue found an adult woman suffering from a gunshot wound. She was taken to UofL Hospital and later died. Her identity had not been publicly released as of Monday morning.
People living nearby told local media that the shooting appeared to extend beyond a single location. Surveillance video captured several gunshots and the sound of what appeared to be a vehicle collision. Witnesses said the wounded woman was behind the wheel of a vehicle that traveled about a block before striking a sedan parked along the curb.
The owner of the parked vehicle said he went outside after hearing the crash and encountered the woman. His account provided a glimpse of the immediate aftermath but did not establish how the shooting began or who fired the shots. Police have not released a detailed chronology of what happened before officers arrived.
Gunfire also struck a nearby residence, according to people interviewed at the scene. Ashley Spurlock told local media that her friend was inside when a window shattered and moved away from the couch toward another part of the home. No additional injuries were reported from inside the residence.
The damage is significant because police charged Reed not only with murder but also with first-degree wanton endangerment. Authorities have not publicly explained the factual basis for that charge, however, and police have not said whether it specifically relates to bullets striking the home or to another part of the incident.
Police announced Reed’s arrest later Saturday. Investigators said the people involved in the shooting had been identified and accounted for. That statement indicated detectives were not publicly searching for an unidentified participant at that time, although the homicide investigation remained open.
Parkland is a west Louisville neighborhood bounded by several major streets and adjoining neighborhoods. Greenwood Avenue runs through an area where police have investigated other shootings this year. Authorities have not announced any connection between Saturday’s killing and those earlier cases.
Important details remain unknown. Police have not said whether Reed knew the woman, what investigators believe prompted the shooting, where the first shot was fired or what evidence led detectives to arrest him within hours. The victim’s name also remained withheld in the latest publicly available reports.
Louisville Metro Police’s Homicide Unit continues to investigate. Reed faces criminal charges stemming from the woman’s death, but the allegations have not been proven in court and authorities have said additional information will be released as the investigation develops.
