Three Teens Shot in Fontana, With 13-Year-Old Arrested in Killing

An 18-year-old died and two younger boys were wounded in the Wednesday evening shooting on Cypress Avenue, police said.

FONTANA, Calif. — A 13-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder after a shooting in a Fontana neighborhood left an 18-year-old dead and wounded two younger boys, according to police.

Fontana police received multiple reports of gunfire at about 6:11 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, in the 9900 block of Cypress Avenue. Officers who arrived at the scene found three male victims with gunshot wounds: a 12-year-old boy, a 15-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man.

The 18-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His identity had not been publicly released in the initial reports reviewed for this story. The 12-year-old and 15-year-old were taken to local hospitals for treatment and later released.

Detectives identified a 13-year-old Fontana boy as the suspected shooter, according to police. Officers later located him in Fontana and took him into custody. He was booked into juvenile hall on suspicion of murder.

Authorities have not released the juvenile suspect’s name. Police also have not publicly disclosed the identities of the two younger victims. The limited release of identifying information comes as investigators continue examining a case involving several minors.

Police have not announced what led to the shooting or described the relationship, if any, among the suspect and the three victims. No confirmed motive has been released, and authorities have not publicly detailed the type of firearm involved or how the 13-year-old allegedly obtained it.

The arrest marks the most significant development disclosed since officers responded to Cypress Avenue. Police have said the boy is suspected in the shooting, but an arrest does not establish guilt. Details about any juvenile court proceedings had not been announced in the reports available as of Monday.

The shooting remains under investigation. Fontana police have asked people with information about the case to contact Detective Samuel Saenz as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the gunfire.
