Patient Accused of Killing Girlfriend During Late-Night Hospital Visit

Prosecutors say James F. Lawson fatally shot Jessica Cyrus while she visited him at Centerpoint Medical Center.

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A Kansas City man has been charged with second-degree murder after authorities said his girlfriend was fatally shot while visiting him at an Independence hospital, a case investigators say is supported by surveillance footage and evidence recovered after his arrest.

James F. Lawson faces second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm in the Oct. 22 death of Jessica Cyrus at Centerpoint Medical Center. Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced the charges Oct. 23. A judge set Lawson’s bond at $250,000 cash only. The charges are accusations, and Lawson is presumed innocent unless he is found guilty or pleads guilty.

Independence police said the incident occurred at about 1:37 a.m. inside a hospital patient room in the 19600 block of East 39th Street. Cyrus had been visiting Lawson, who had been admitted to the hospital. Hospital staff later notified an off-duty Independence police officer working at the medical center of what they considered a suspicious death, according to a probable cause statement filed in court.

Officers responded at about 9:30 a.m. and found Cyrus dead. Investigators said she had first been found in a reclining chair before medical staff moved her to a bed. The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office later identified a single gunshot wound to her chest. Police said Lawson had left the hospital before officers arrived and was later located at a strip mall near the medical center.

Detectives obtained hospital surveillance footage showing activity outside and partially inside the room. According to the probable cause statement, Lawson entered the room at 1:37:10 a.m. and closed the door, although it did not latch. Seconds later, the door opened. Investigators said the video showed Lawson in his wheelchair facing Cyrus as she appeared to have trouble breathing and began bending forward. The footage also showed Lawson handling the area near the right side of his pants and hip, with a dark object visible in his right hand.

The court filing said a nurse approached the room moments later and interacted with Lawson but did not interact with Cyrus. The nurse later told investigators she had seen Cyrus in a recliner during checks overnight and believed she was sleeping. The nurse said she did not observe suspicious behavior during Lawson’s interactions with Cyrus, according to the probable cause statement.

Detectives said no firearm or shell casing was found in the hospital room. During Lawson’s arrest, officers found a holster on him and recovered a box of 9 mm ammunition and a loose round from his wheelchair, according to court records. Police also searched a van connected to Lawson and Cyrus but reported finding no firearm or ammunition inside it.

During interviews with police, Lawson said his memory of events was “fuzzy,” according to the probable cause statement. He attributed his limited recollection to his medical condition and medication he said had been administered through an IV. Lawson acknowledged that Cyrus was his girlfriend and told investigators he could not explain what happened to her or account for some of his movements in and out of the hospital room, the filing said.

The complaint also alleges Lawson was prohibited from possessing a firearm because of an earlier felony conviction. Prosecutors cited a 2008 Missouri conviction for escape from custody as the basis for the unlawful possession charge. The state alleges Lawson knowingly caused Cyrus’ death by shooting her and used a deadly weapon while committing the offense.

Centerpoint Medical Center said in a statement that it was deeply saddened by the visitor’s death and was cooperating with law enforcement. The hospital said the safety and privacy of patients, visitors and employees remained its highest priority and declined to release additional details because of the continuing investigation and privacy concerns.

Independence police said everyone believed to have been involved has been accounted for and there are no outstanding suspects. The department’s Criminal Investigations Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Cyrus’ death, including the location of the firearm described in court records.
