Deputies said Nathan Bentley was shot after a verbal confrontation, and no arrests had been announced Saturday morning.
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. — An 18-year-old man died after he was shot during a dispute at a fast-food restaurant in Northwest Miami-Dade late Friday, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies identified the victim as Nathan Bentley. Authorities said deputies responded to the restaurant in the area of Northwest 27th Avenue and 108th Street and found Bentley suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died.
Investigators said the shooting began with a verbal altercation between Bentley and another person. The confrontation escalated, deputies said, and the other person pulled out a gun, shot Bentley and fled. Authorities had not announced an arrest as of Saturday morning.
The sheriff’s office had not publicly identified the person deputies were seeking or released a detailed description. Officials also had not announced what prompted the initial disagreement or whether Bentley and the other person knew each other before the confrontation. The investigation remained active.
Bentley’s mother, Nohely Bogert, told Local 10 News that her son was shot outside a McDonald’s in the area. She said Bentley had been watching a football game with her at a field across the street before the shooting. Her account provided additional context about Bentley’s movements before the gunfire, while investigators continued working to establish the full sequence of events.
Bogert said Bentley was a student at Miami Dade College and had recently graduated from Hallandale High School. She described him as a positive influence within his family and said he was an older brother to younger siblings. She also said he enjoyed rapping and was known by the nickname “G Baby.”
Detectives remained at the scene for hours after the shooting. Local 10 reported that investigators collected evidence from the area, including a cellphone brought to their attention by a bystander. Authorities had not publicly said whether the phone belonged to Bentley, the person being sought or someone else, or what role it might play in the investigation.
The shooting left investigators with several unanswered questions, including what caused the dispute and where the person who fled went afterward. The sheriff’s office had not announced a suspected motive beyond its account that the gunfire followed a verbal altercation.
No arrests had been reported by Saturday morning. Miami-Dade sheriff’s detectives continued investigating Bentley’s death and had not released additional information about a possible suspect.
