Elderly Woman Clings to Pension Cash as Teen Drags Her

CCTV footage showed the woman resisting as a youth allegedly tried to take a bag containing 4,000 rupees in pension money.

CHHATRAPATI SAMBHAJINAGAR, India — A juvenile was apprehended after an elderly woman was knocked to the ground and dragged along a road during an alleged attempt to steal a bag containing her pension money, according to reports from Maharashtra state.

The confrontation occurred Oct. 26 in the Garkheda area of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and was captured by a surveillance camera. Reports said the woman was walking home after withdrawing 4,000 rupees in pension money from a bank when the youth approached and tried to take her bag.

Footage circulating online shows the youth pulling at the bag as the woman holds onto it. She falls to the road during the struggle and is dragged a short distance while continuing to resist. The youth eventually moves away from her, and the woman remains on the road as people begin gathering nearby.

The Free Press Journal reported that the youth also kicked the woman during the struggle. That detail was not independently established in the material reviewed by Reuters Connect, which described the incident as an attempted bag snatching in which the woman was pushed to the ground. No detailed medical assessment of the woman was available in the reports reviewed.

Shekhar Jadhav, identified by the Free Press Journal as a district leader of the Yuva Sena political organization, was passing through the area and joined other residents in pursuing the fleeing youth, the newspaper reported. The group caught the juvenile a short distance away and turned him over to Jawaharnagar police.

Some early reports differed over precisely how the suspect was caught. Material carried by Reuters Connect said one report stated that local residents apprehended the teenager after hearing the woman’s cries, while other reporting credited Jadhav and residents with the pursuit. Reuters Connect said it had not independently confirmed Jadhav’s role.

The available reports also differed on the immediate police procedure. Reuters Connect said reporting from Oct. 26 indicated police had confirmed the CCTV footage was from Garkheda but that no formal complaint had been registered at that point. Later reporting said the juvenile had been handed to police for further action.

The woman’s name and age were not released in the reports reviewed, and authorities had not publicly announced charges or other juvenile proceedings. Because the suspect is a minor, his name was also not published in the reports.

The case drew broader attention after the CCTV recording spread online, but several details remained unconfirmed, including the woman’s condition and what further action police had taken against the juvenile. Reports consistently described the encounter as an alleged attempt to take the woman’s bag rather than a completed theft.
