Four Killed in Three Halloween Shootings in Deep Ellum

Dallas police said the shootings happened within a short period as crowded streets emptied and investigators began collecting witness accounts and video.

DALLAS, Texas — Four people were killed and 15 others were wounded in three separate shootings in Dallas’ Deep Ellum entertainment district around Halloween night, prompting a large police response and an ongoing search for additional suspects.

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said investigators do not believe the three shootings were connected. The violence unfolded across several blocks in the busy nightlife district late Saturday and early Sunday as Halloween crowds filled the neighborhood. Police closed the area during the emergency response, while officers began interviewing witnesses and gathering surveillance and cellphone video.

Police said the first shooting happened around midnight in the 2600 block of Elm Street, where five people were shot in a parking lot during what authorities described as an apparent altercation. Minutes later, gunfire erupted near Commerce and South Crowdus streets, leaving three people dead. A third shooting was reported around 1:35 a.m. in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street, where another person was killed.

Officials later said a total of 15 people were wounded across the night’s violence. Authorities have not publicly detailed the conditions of all of the injured people. Comeaux said officers were nearby when the shootings began and responded quickly as people ran from the area.

Video recorded in Deep Ellum showed people suddenly scrambling for cover. Thomas Jennings, a manager at St. Pete’s Dancing Marlin, told CBS News Texas that he saw people ducking and running while he was cleaning behind the bar. He said he allowed a woman caught near the shooting to take shelter inside and then locked the door.

Investigators spent Sunday seeking more video from businesses and people who had been in Deep Ellum. Comeaux said police had witnesses and had made arrests but were still searching for additional suspects. Authorities have not said that all of the people arrested were directly responsible for the fatal shootings, and police have not announced a motive linking the three incidents.

Public records reviewed by CBS News Texas identified two of those killed as 28-year-old Unique Elise Benjamin and 21-year-old Kanisea Scott. Relatives also identified Anthony Martin, also known as Quincey McCleary, and Isaiah Boling as victims. Their ages were not immediately available in the reporting reviewed Monday.

The shootings renewed concerns about violence in Deep Ellum, a historic entertainment district east of downtown Dallas. The Halloween violence came about six months after separate shootings in the neighborhood left security officer Joseph Gray dead and five other people wounded. Police also investigated a triple shooting on Elm Street in August.

Business owners and workers said the neighborhood had been crowded but largely peaceful before the gunfire. Some pushed back against broader descriptions of Deep Ellum as inherently unsafe while acknowledging concerns about violence during large late-night gatherings. The Deep Ellum Foundation announced community listening sessions this week with Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Jesse Moreno.

Police continued Monday to review surveillance footage, interview witnesses and search for people believed to have information about the shootings. Authorities had not announced that the three attacks were connected, and investigators had not publicly established motives for the killings.
