Langley Park Shooting Kills Teen, Critically Injures Another

One teenage girl died and another remained critically injured as detectives worked to determine who fired the shots and why.

LANGLEY PARK, Md. — Investigators do not believe an early-morning shooting that killed one teenage girl and critically injured another in Prince George’s County was a random attack, police said Tuesday.

The preliminary assessment gives detectives one potential direction in an investigation that otherwise remained largely unresolved Tuesday afternoon. Police had not identified a suspect, announced an arrest or disclosed a motive in the shooting on the 8100 block of 15th Avenue.

Officers were sent to the area at about 1:50 a.m. Nov. 3 after a report of gunfire. Police found one teenage girl outside with a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Another teenage girl was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

Authorities have not publicly explained why detectives believe the shooting was not random. They also have not said whether the girls knew the shooter, whether they knew each other before the incident or what may have happened in the moments leading up to the gunfire.

The Prince George’s County Police Department’s Homicide Unit is leading the investigation. Detectives were working to identify the person or people responsible and establish a motive, while details about the victims remained limited.

Police had not released the names or exact ages of either girl as of Tuesday afternoon. Officials also had not announced any change in the surviving victim’s condition beyond saying she was critically injured.

No suspect description had been made public, and police had not said whether investigators were looking for a particular vehicle. Authorities also had not disclosed whether evidence collected at the scene had pointed detectives toward a specific person.

The shooting left investigators with several unanswered questions, including what brought the victims to the location before 2 a.m. and what connection, if any, existed between them and the person responsible. Police have cautioned through their limited disclosures that the investigation remains active.

Homicide detectives asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact them at 301-516-2512. No arrests had been announced, and the motive remained under investigation Tuesday.
