Home Invasion Turns Fatal as Elderly Homeowner Confronts Suspected Intruder

Authorities say an 80-year-old homeowner was unharmed after a shooting at a Misty Hollow Drive residence Tuesday morning.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A suspected intruder was shot and killed Tuesday morning during a reported break-in at the home of an 80-year-old man in northwest Harris County, authorities said.

Deputies were dispatched shortly before 9 a.m. Nov. 3 to the 15700 block of Misty Hollow Drive after a 911 call reporting a burglar, according to the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office. Authorities said the homeowner reported the break-in, and a shooting occurred during the encounter. Deputies arriving at the residence found a man with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The homeowner was not physically injured in the shooting, authorities said. He was taken to a hospital because of a minor medical concern or as a precaution following the incident. Officials have not publicly identified either the homeowner or the man who was killed.

Preliminary information released by investigators indicates the homeowner encountered an unknown man at the residence before the shooting. Authorities have described the dead man as a suspected burglar or possible intruder, but they have not released a detailed account of how he entered the property or what happened immediately before the gunfire.

Investigators also have not said whether the two men knew each other. Authorities said no one else was inside the home at the time of the shooting. That leaves several parts of the encounter unresolved, including the exact sequence of events and what investigators may find as they review evidence from the scene.

Sgt. Sidney Miller of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said investigators were seeking surveillance video and potential witnesses as they worked to establish what happened. The homeowner told deputies he had encountered the man inside his home or on his property when the shooting occurred, according to information released by authorities.

The Precinct 4 Constable’s Office initially described the case as a shooting involving a possible home intruder. Its preliminary account said a resident encountered an unknown person on the property before gunfire was reported. Deputies later confirmed that the wounded man had died at the scene.

Authorities had not released the dead man’s identity as of Wednesday morning, and no additional findings about the circumstances leading to the shooting had been announced. The investigation remains active.
