Teen Accused of Killing Father After Harris County Family Fight

Authorities are examining the confrontation between a father and his 17-year-old son before deciding whether criminal charges are warranted.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A fatal shooting inside a northwest Harris County home followed an altercation between a 37-year-old father and his 17-year-old son whose disputes had been an ongoing family issue, investigators said Friday.

Harris County Precinct 1 deputies were called shortly after 1:15 a.m. to a home in the 7700 block of Westbank Avenue. Deputies found the father shot inside the residence, and emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, relatives told investigators that the father and son had been fighting before the teenager obtained a pistol and shot his father. The teenager then left the home on foot before deputies arrived.

The teenager’s mother and two younger siblings were inside the residence at the time of the shooting. They were not injured. Authorities have not released the names of the father or son.

Investigators said relatives described arguments between the father and teenager as an ongoing problem and said the two had been involved in disputes before. Officials have not said what triggered Friday morning’s confrontation, however, and they were still trying to determine how the disagreement escalated into a physical fight and then gunfire.

That sequence remains a central part of the investigation. Authorities said they had not established whether the father was assaulting his son, whether the teenager was assaulting his father or what actions each took immediately before the shooting. Investigators have therefore stopped short of announcing criminal charges.

The teenager’s absence also left investigators without his account of the encounter. Deputies searched the immediate area after learning that he had fled on foot, but he had not been located by Friday morning. Authorities said they wanted to speak with him before reaching conclusions about the confrontation.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation remained active as detectives worked to compare statements from people who were inside the home with other evidence. Officials had not publicly disclosed additional details about the pistol, how the teenager obtained it or what specifically caused the argument.

Although deputies continued searching for the 17-year-old, investigators said they did not believe he posed a threat to the general public. No charging decision had been announced Friday, and authorities said the circumstances surrounding the father’s death were still being established.
