Father Fatally Shot as Family Fight Erupts Inside Harris County Home

A mother and two younger children were inside the home as investigators say a dispute between a father and teenage son turned deadly.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding a long-running family conflict after a 37-year-old father was fatally shot during a confrontation with his 17-year-old son at a northwest Harris County home early Friday.

The teenager’s mother and two younger siblings were also inside the house when the shooting occurred but were not injured, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Family members told investigators that arguments between the father and son had happened before, although authorities have not determined publicly what caused the latest dispute or precisely how the confrontation unfolded.

Harris County Precinct 1 deputies were dispatched to the home on Westbank Avenue, near West Road and Fairbanks North Houston, at about 1:20 a.m. Deputies found the 37-year-old man fatally shot after arriving at the residence.

Investigators said information gathered from family members indicated that the father and his 17-year-old son had been fighting. During that confrontation, authorities said, the teenager got a pistol and shot his father before leaving the house.

Authorities initially searched the surrounding area for the teenager after he left on foot. Investigators said at the time that they wanted to find him and obtain his version of the events leading to the shooting. The sheriff’s office later said deputies made contact with the teenager and interviewed him.

The accounts gathered so far have left investigators with an important unresolved issue. Sgt. Jason Brown of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office said authorities were working to establish whether the father was assaulting the son or whether the son was assaulting his father. Investigators have not announced a final determination about the confrontation.

The teenager’s mother and his two younger siblings, approximately 14 and 12 years old, were in the residence at the time, authorities said. None was hurt. Investigators spoke with family members as they tried to reconstruct what happened before the shooting and understand the history of disputes between the father and son.

Authorities have not released the names of the father or teenager. They also have not publicly detailed the subject of the dispute, whether the firearm has been recovered or whether law enforcement had previously been called to the home in connection with earlier arguments.

No criminal charge has been announced against the teenager. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said investigators will present the case to a grand jury, which will determine whether the evidence supports charges. The investigation remains ongoing.
